Upward Bound Students Participate in Health Fair
Metro Center's Upward Bound Program students recently participated in a Health Fair program developed and coordinated by the students in Metro Center's 1199 WorkForce Pre-RN Component.
Pre-RN students were successful in showcasing their knowledge and health-related projects by coordinating a series of workshops on topics relevant to young people.
1199/SEIU Health and Wellness Department team under the expert direction of Ms. Myriam Moreno kicked the day off with an exciting, interactive and informative presentation on Healthy Living and Lifestyle Choices.
NYU's Student Health Center and Health Promotions staff coordinated by Ms. Melissa Hume, assisted in providing specially trained student STRESSBUSTERS who provided free backrubs to students and staff.
Upward Bound Staff provided a variety of freebies, healthy give-a-ways and prizes for students participating in the workshops.

Pre-RN students, mentored by Upward Bound Program Staff produced stellar projects. They delivered comprehensive and interactive presentations which confirmed their knowledge and expertise as future nursing professionals. Upward Bound and WorkForce students left each presentation armed with information, pamphlets and tools to foster healthy living.
The workshop topics chosen this year included:
Stress Relief - The classroom was transformed into a peaceful, warm and relaxing environment with soothing photos- mood music and amazing aroma therapy, while students learned techniques for relaxation and ways to avoid stress. The highlight was of course the STRESSBUSTERS and their wonderful back rubs.

Sleep Disorders- Students identified their sleep patterns through the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and learned the importance of long lasting healthy sleep patterns through a vibrant power point presentation. Participants learned to identify common disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea and narcolepsy, while learning about some exciting advances in treatment and prevention.
Adolescent Alcoholism- An emotional YouTube video and power point presentation emphasized the reality and side effects of adolescent and underage drinking. Demonstrations of the effects of blood alcohol level and toxicity as well as the use of a breathalyzer informed students about the dangers of alcohol. Best of all, students exchanged ideas about how to say no to alcohol and shared powerful techniques to avoid peer pressure. Healthy alternatives to alcohol were also presented.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases - Featured a dynamic student created video demonstrating how young people unknowingly transmitted a virus among their group of friends. Students learned about herpes, genital warps, gonorrhea, and Chlamydia, while being instructed by their peers on effective methods of prevention. Although somewhat graphic, the power point presentation offered our young people valuable information about life choices.
The program applauds our Pre-RN students for providing this wonderful opportunity for their peers. We are proud of their accomplishments and wish them well as they continue on the path to a career in Nursing.
