Upward Bound Runs Series of Financial Aid Workshops

In December the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education conducted a two part Financial Aid Workshop for parents of high school seniors and students. The first part was conducted on a Saturday session as a part of the College Planning Workshop series lead by Upward Bound Assistant Director, Marilyn Sommer.

This workshop entitled: Everything you need to know to begin the Financial Aid Application Process was attended by over 70 students and Parents. Ms. Marilyn Sommer was joined by Ms. Judy Hernandez Manager of Joseph Tuber Scholarship Program for 1199/SEIU and together they covered everything from sources of financial aid to setting up a federal student aid pin number along with vital information and strategies to complete the FAFSA on-line application, scholarships and various grant programs.

Pat Ryan-Canedo, Director of UB along with our Hunter College Field Work Counselor Interns greeted guests and distributed packets of the most up to date financial aid information and answered questions about the nuances of scholarship processing and special circumstances regarding federal aid and loan programs.

The second workshop was held on a Wednesday evening in December at the 1199 headquarters. Ms. Marilyn Sommer, Assistant Director of Upward Bound and Ms. Judy Hernandez, Manager of the Joseph Tuber Scholarship Program conducted the workshop for for over 200 1199/SEIU employees.

It was a great opportunity for parents to learn about the financial aid options available and how to complete the application process.
