SBETAC

Who We Are - What We Do

The NYS SBETAC provides professional development, technical assistance and educational resources on a variety of topics by:

  • Disseminating information related to bilingual education, dual language, and English as a second language programs
  • Consulting on the instructional and programmatic needs of Limited English Proficient/English Language Learners (LEP/ELL) for school districts and communities
  • Assisting on issues concerning Students With Interrupted Formal Education (SIFE)
  • Providing workshops for parents, teachers, administrators, and supervisors of Spanish-speaking students
  • Promoting and supporting the Plazas Comunitarias literacy and basic education program for Spanish-speaking students
  • Collaborating on an array of initiatives with the NYC Department of Education and NYS BETACs
  • Publicizing information on language acquisition and language-centered content area instruction
  • Reviewing assessments required by No Child Left Behind, NYS, and NYC for LEP/ELLs
  • Supporting the development of parental and community involvement in LEP/ELL student education
  • Publishing a monthly news bulletin
  • Holding a Spelling Bee in Spanish for students, grades 4 to 6
  • Co-organizing a Spanish Literature Symposium
  • Supporting the establishment of Spanish Advanced Placement courses
  • Distributing information regarding Spanish classroom librarie
