Who We Are - What We Do
The NYS SBETAC provides professional development, technical assistance and educational resources on a variety of topics by:
- Disseminating information related to bilingual education, dual language, and English as a second language programs
- Consulting on the instructional and programmatic needs of Limited English Proficient/English Language Learners (LEP/ELL) for school districts and communities
- Assisting on issues concerning Students With Interrupted Formal Education (SIFE)
- Providing workshops for parents, teachers, administrators, and supervisors of Spanish-speaking students
- Promoting and supporting the Plazas Comunitarias literacy and basic education program for Spanish-speaking students
- Collaborating on an array of initiatives with the NYC Department of Education and NYS BETACs
- Publicizing information on language acquisition and language-centered content area instruction
- Reviewing assessments required by No Child Left Behind, NYS, and NYC for LEP/ELLs
- Supporting the development of parental and community involvement in LEP/ELL student education
- Publishing a monthly news bulletin
- Holding a Spelling Bee in Spanish for students, grades 4 to 6
- Co-organizing a Spanish Literature Symposium
- Supporting the establishment of Spanish Advanced Placement courses
- Distributing information regarding Spanish classroom librarie
