On Tuesday, April 22 and Wednesday, April 23, students in Steinhardt’s Metro Center’s APEX Scholars Program, a mentoring program which connects current NYU students and current New York City high school juniors, participated in the “APEX Goes to College Trip.” On Tuesday, students attended a Pre-Departure orientation here at NYU which focused on topics surrounding college preparation, responsibility, and the admissions process as it relates to campus visits.
Students departed New York City bright and early on Wednesday morning and traveled to Baltimore, Maryland for a tour of the John Hopkins University’s main campus. Students had the opportunity to ask important admissions and campus life questions to current students and admission counselors during their visit. APEX Scholars, many of whom were on their first visit outside of New York City, also had a chance to enjoy Baltimore’s beautiful Inner Harbor for lunch with their mentors and other school administrators who attended the college trip. The day concluded with a visit to the nation’s Famous Blacks in Wax Museum, housing an intellectually stimulating visual interpretation of historical events in the United States and abroad as it relates to the African Diaspora and Black experience. Students will have an opportunity to share their experiences with mentors and other APEX students at their next Saturday Academy which takes place at 11:00 am on NYU’s campus.
The APEX Scholars program is a program of the Metro Center’s School Services Center and is funded by the Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs Foundations. The Program services a cadre of 11th grade students enrolled at Bronx international, Louis D. Brandeis and Manhattan Theater Lab High Schools in New York City. |
