The Metro Center, an applied research organization housed in NYU's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, has been implementing a successful Liberty Partnerships Program in partnership with a variety of New York City public schools since 1995. Through comprehensive services designed to meet the academic, psychological, social and other developmental needs of high-risk students, the program fosters academic resilience resulting in high school completion, persistence in higher education and successful transitions into the world of work as productive members of society.
The program will partner with Bedford Stuyvesant Preparatory High School, Brooklyn Academy High School, and the Academy of Business and Community Development. All three schools are located in Bedford Stuyvesant, a predominantly Black, low-income community in Brooklyn; considered one of the neediest neighborhoods in New York City.
The program will consist of a combination of school-based and campus-based activities including individual and small group tutoring, test preparation, counseling, and advisement, mentoring, college and career awareness and preparation, and parent engagement. The program will operate for twelve months a year with school-based activities during the school year and activities held on the NYU campus on Saturday and during the summer.
