Who We Are
The Asian Languages Bilingual/ESL Technical Assistance Center (ALBETAC) is one of the three language BETACs funded by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to provide services to school regions, in order to enhance the quality of education for ELLs of specific language backgrounds.  Located at Metro Center for Urban Education in New York University, ALBETAC focuses its services to raise academic achievements of English language learners (ELLs) from Asian backgrounds through professional development and community involvement.

In 1990, NYSED funded the first language specific BETAC – the Chinese/Asian BETAC (CABETAC).  17 years later, there are three languages BETAC and the CABETAC has evolved to the ALBETAC. Today the ALBETAC has expanded its services to six target Asian languages: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Korean, Russian and Urdu. In conjunction with this language expansion, the ALBETAC also plans to evolve in areas such as technical assistance, information dissemination, professional development activities for administrators, teachers, and parents, and direct assistance in planning and implementing productive strategies to better serve Asian language ELLs and their parents.
The ALBETAC look forward to continuing its collaboration with the BETAC Network, New York University Metro Center, and the central and regional offices within the New York City Department of Education to serve the diverse Asian communities throughout New York State.
