Ted MagderChair
Since October, 2003, Ted has served as Chair of the Department. His research interests include the political economy of communication, the relationship between systems of mediated communication and democracy, communication policy and law, contemporary media culture, and globalization. He is the author of Canada's Hollywood: The Canadian State and Feature Films and Franchising the Candy Store: Split-Run Magazines and the New International Regime for Trade in Culture (Canadian-American Public Policy Series) as well as numerous scholarly articles.
Noni Bourne
Undergraduate Advisor
Noni comes to us from Georgetown University where she worked as a Research Assistant creating a chronology of African-American women’s socio-political and publication histories. She also taught an intensive reading and writing seminar to incoming freshman in Georgetown’s Community Scholars Program. Noni earned her undergraduate degree in English from Spelman College and a Master of Arts in English and American Literature from Georgetown University.
Sandra Criscione
Associate Director of Undergraduate Affairs
Sandra earned her B.A. from Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, majoring in Sociology and Anthropology. Upon graduating, she worked as a Foster Care Case Manager at the Department of Social Services in Washington DC and later went on to work in the production department of Warner Books in New York City. In May 2001, she earned her MA from NYU in Media Ecology with a concentration in Film Studies. While in graduate school she spent two years doing research with Mark Crispin Miller on the Project on Media Ownership, an affiliation of NYU. Before acting as Internship Program Administrator she was an advisor to undergraduate students.
Mandy Ellenwood
Projects Administrator
Mandy Ellenwood is the department’s prospect researcher, grantwriter, and funded projects administrator.
Ivan Makar
Senior Undergraduate Advisor and Adjunct Instructor
Ivan earned his undergraduate degree in Psychology from Fordham University and his Master of Arts Degree and Master of Education Degree in Psychological Counseling from Teachers College Columbia University. Prior to coming to NYU, Ivan served as Class Dean at Columbia University. He has worked extensively with university students and young adults in various academic settings as an academic advisor, personal and career counselor, instructor, mentor and educator. As Senior Undergraduate Advisor, he acts as the department contact for all advising issues including orientation, new student seminar, transfer credit evaluation and graduation checkout. He also manages our Peer Advising Program. As an Adjunct Instructor, Ivan teaches courses in Speech and Interpersonal Communication. He is an active member of the Ukrainian-American community and has served as President of a youth organization, an International Elections Monitor and an interpreter for the Ukrainian Gymnastics Teams at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
Stacy Rosenberg
Assistant Director for External Relations and Adjunct Instructor
Stacy manages external partnerships and communications for the NYU Department of Media, Culture, and Communication and the NYU Council for Media and Culture. She has taught the courses Media and Identity and Media Criticism for the department, and is currently teaching Business and Its Publics at the NYU Stern School of Business. Previously, Stacy served as Associate Director at the NYU Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism, and Sports Management, was a strategic partners producer for the arts and entertainment guide Citysearch.com, and worked in television for The Walt Disney Company. Projects included media relations and satellite coordination for The Walt Disney World Animal Kingdom and Downtown Disney grand opening press events, and production on Oprah, Roseanne, Boy Meets World, an N’ Sync music video and more. Stacy was published in the Encyclopedia of Television, earned her Masters in Media Ecology from NYU and her Bachelors in Telecommunication with a concentration in Business from the University of Florida where she was a Florida Academic Scholar, graduated summa cum laude, and was awarded the Dean's Cup for Professional Promise.
Judi Stevens
Department Administrator
BA, MA, JD
Judi is the chief administrative officer of the department and works closely with the Chair on all financial and administrative concerns.
Mary Taylor
Graduate Advisor
Mary serves as the advisor to MA students and provides administrative support to the department's graduate programs. Mary received her BA in English Literature from the University of Arizona and her MA in Higher Education Administration from Eastern Michigan University. She has recently relocated to New York from New Hampshire where she worked in various administrative roles at the University of New Hampshire.
Shannon Young
Undergraduate Advisor
Shannon earned her B.A. in English and Cultural Studies at Chatham College in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and completed her M.A. in English with a concentration in Film Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Much of her academic work has focused on feminist theories of the body. She has worked with students in a variety of capacities from teaching freshmen writing courses to advising high-achieving undergraduates. She moved to New York in 2006 from Pittsburgh, where she last worked as an undergraduate advisor at Carnegie Mellon University in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. In her free time, Shannon enjoys vegan cooking, thrifting, and decorating.
SUPPORT STAFF
Darrell Carter
Darrell directs the flow of student traffic through the department and is the first point of contact for visitors. He supervises student workers, provides administrative assistance to the undergraduate program in Communication Studies and maintains department databases.
Annette Morales
Annette provides administrative support to both the Speech and Interpersonal and Media Ecology programs, and is instrumental in booking space for department events and acting as liaison to the telecommunications and campus media offices.
Cathy Waldo
Cathy works closely with our department administrator on budget issues, reimbursements, and other financial and administrative projects.
Gina Young
Gina provides administrative support to the graduate programs. She oversees the distribution and collection of course evaluation forms and provides assistance with campus media services, ordering books and supplies, and room assignments.
