Our M.A. programs in Education and Social Policy, and Sociology of
Education, prepare graduates for careers as educational researchers in
a variety of settings - research, evaluation, and policy organizations;
government agencies; and youth and community service organizations.
Develop sophisticated skills in quantitative methodology and policy
analysis or study schools from a range of humanistic and social science
perspectives.
M.A. in Education and Social Policy
This
program addresses the growing demand for professionals with
quantitative skills in education policy analysis. The curriculum's
strong emphasis on using quantitative methods to determine causal
effects of education programs and policies distinguishes this program
from other master's degrees in education policy.
- You will
learn quantitative skills from the beginning of the program, from the
first level of statistics through regression analysis and econometrics,
including computer skills necessary to implement policy analyses.
- A
carefully planned sequence of courses in economics and sociology lays
the theoretical foundation you need to apply your growing skills in
statistics, analytical methods, and research design to a range of
education issues.
- Elective courses allow you to pursue your
individual interests in a specific education policy area, such as
higher education, race and class, international education, or K-12
education issues.
- Your 40-credit program of study comes
together in a final directed group research project in which you will
produce a professional study of an educational intervention or policy
of your own choosing.
M.A. in Sociology of Education
In
this program, you will examine the role of education in society, and
specifically how politics, economics, culture, and other social forces
create variation in schools and in student outcomes.
- Explore these issues through core courses in sociological research methods and theory as well as in the sociology of education.
- Develop
analytical skills through electives in empirical research methods, such
as statistics, interviewing methods, survey design, or ethnographic
approaches.
- Focus your studies through a concentration in
Social and Cultural Studies of Education or Education Policy. Tailor
your course selection and thesis research to your chosen topics of
interest.
- In the Social and Cultural Studies of Education
concentration, you might focus on racial or gender/sexual identity and
politics in education, the role of media and new technologies in
schools, or the relationship between schools and other social systems
such as the family or the nation-state.
- In the Education Policy
concentration, you will take additional courses in economics, education
policy, and advanced statistics to prepare for careers in education
policy formation and evaluation.
- Undertake and complete a
research thesis - the central component of our program. Through a
two-semester intensive seminar, you will work with an advisor to design
and carry out year-long, original research, developing mastery along
the way in particular modes of inquiry as well as a specific
substantive area.
