Our M.A. programs in Literacy Education - Birth-Grade 6 and Grades 5-12 - provide you with the opportunity to earn the New York State Literacy Specialist Certificate.

About Our Curriculum

• 34-credit program can be completed in 1.5 years years of full-time study
• Learn to understand the principles of language and literacy learning and the development of diverse learners, especially those who are experiencing difficulty with literacy learning, across developmental levels, academic discipline, and social and cultural contexts
• Integrate strategic teaching of reading and writing throughout your speciality area
• Use data for decision making

Career Opportunities

Program graduates will qualify for literacy specialist positions. If you're graduating from the Birth-Grade 6 program you will  work in early childhood, preschool, private, and public schools through grade 6 either as a teacher with special expertise in teaching in reading and writing or as a literacy specialist. If you're graduating from the Grades 5-12 program you will work at the middle school or high school levels as a teacher in a particular content area with special expertise in integrating the teaching of language and literacy into your curricula or as a literacy specialist.

You will also be qualified to work in after-school programs, clinical settings in hospitals and community centers, new educational companies that focus on literacy learning, and in private tutoring practice.  In addition, this degree also provides an excellent background for positions in the educational publishing industry that concentrates on the development of ltieracy materials and literacy assessment.

Broaden Your Learning Through Global Study

A unique graduate study abroad course in Literacy Teaching and Learning is offered each summer in London and Oxford, Englad.
