This is an exciting time to work in educational media. Rapid changes
in technology are reshaping learning, opening up opportunities for
greater collaboration and creativity in teching and learning.
Our
M.A., Advanced Certificate, and Ph.D. programs in educational media
prepare professionals to take the lead in designing, evaluating, using,
and studying technology-based learning environments.
Master of Arts and Advanced Certificate
- Participate
in project-based interdisciplinary curricula that draw on cognitive and
learning sciences, developmental models of learning, and social
learning theory for designing educational environments.
- Use established and emergent digital media to create computer-based learning experiences and content for different age groups.
- Experiment
with simulations, games, problem-solving challenges, story-based and
case-based environments, documentaries, public service programs, as
well as online, synchronous, and asynchronous forms of collaboration.
- Develop
expertise in instructional design, prototyping and evaluation, and
project management through internships and a final master's thesis.
- Join
our graduates who work as educational media producers, instructional
writers, designers, and trainers and as educational technology
administrators and coordinators with such employers as TimeLine Film
& Video, Christie's, Oxford University Press, Designed2Learn, the
World Bank, New York Hall of Science, and schools and universities
throughout the country.
Ph.D. Program
- Engage in research about multimedia environments and how they affect learning.
- Ground
your studies in cognitive science and other fields such as
communication design, information design, multimedia learning theory,
human-computer interaction, human symbolization, and aesthetics.
- Determine the instructional technology, theory, and research directions you wish to pursue in this flexible curriculum.
- Participate
in research projects with faculty through Steinhardt's Consortium for
Research and Evaluation of Advanced Technologies in Education (CREATE),
Games for Learning Institute, and other NYU centers.
- Join
graduates who work as scholars and researchers in educational media at
universities and colleges here and abroad and in private and non-profit
settings, including Pixar Animation Studio in Los Angeles, and the
Center for Children and Technology and the Center for Educational
Partnerships, both in New York City.

Applications
to the M.A. and Advanced Certificate programs are accepted twice
yearly. The deadline is February 1 for summer or fall entry, and
November 1 for spring.
Applications to the doctoral program are reviewed once yearly. The deadline is December 15.
