From One to Eight: A Longitudinal Portrait of the First Grade Class of 1995-1996
In the fall of 1995, approximately 86,000 students enrolled in first grade in New York City. This cohort of students was expected to graduate from high school in June 2007. As we seek to understand why some met this goal while others did not, it is critical for us to understand where they began. This IESP Policy Brief follows this cohort of students for their first eight years of schooling. Our analysis highlights the high rate of mobility in and out of City schools, the relationship between mobility and grade promotion, attendance and test scores.
