Welcome Letter for Fall 2012
Dear New EDSP Students:
Welcome to NYU! On behalf of the HMSS department and all Education and Social Policy (EDSP) faculty, we very much look forward to you joining us in the fall.
This letter contains information about advising and registering for courses your first semester, fall 2012, as well as some other helpful advice.
A full time course load during your first semester consists of four courses (a total of 12 to 15 credits). This will meet the requirements for student loans, scholarships, and visas. (If you have questions about student loans contact NYU's Office of Financial Aid at (212) 998-4444 or financial.aid@nyu.edu. Questions about school based scholarships can be directed to Yvette Brown, at yvette.brown@nyu.edu ). A part time course load is two courses (6 to 7 credits).
For your first semester of study in the fall, you should first determine if you should waive any first semester courses (microeconomics, statistics or sociology of education, listed below). You can waive these (and substitute an elective) if you took a comparable course as an undergraduate within the last three years and received a B+ or better. Email our Program Coordinator, Letizia La Rosa at letizia.larosa@nyu.edu if you wish to be considered. Otherwise register for:
- CORE-GP 1018 Microeconomics for Public Management, Planning, and Policy Analysis (4 credits)
- SOED-GE 2002 Intro to Sociology of Education (3 credits)
- RESCH-GE 2001 Statistics for Behavioral and Social Sciences (3 credits)
- One elective (see below)
NOTE: It is wise to register early for the Wagner course to maximize the chances of getting your choice lecture and recitation.
For SOED-GE 2002 (Introduction to Sociology of Education) you will need a code to register. Please contact Letizia La Rosa (letizia.larosa@nyu.edu) for the code, using an email subject heading ‘SOED-GE 2002 Code for EDSP.” For CORE-GP 1018 (Microeconomics for Public Management Planning and Policy Analysis), you will need to choose both a lecture (LEC) and a discussion section (RCT) from the choices below, and request the course through NYU Wagner (http://wagner.nyu.edu/courses/nyugrad). Wagner will let you know within a few days about your registration in that choice.
In addition to the courses above, you should enroll in one elective course for an additional 3 credits, chosen from this link: http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/humsocsci/policy/courses/fall2012.
You can register on your own now that you have received this letter by following the instructions here: http://www.nyu.edu/registrar/registration/albert-registration.html. Once the fall semester begins, you will be assigned to an official faculty advisor who will discuss your coursework with you in detail. For immediate issues regarding fall registration, if you need to contact an advisor, you can sign up for an advising session during the summer on one of the dates listed below. Additionally, if you encounter difficulties during the registration process, contact Letizia La Rosa at letizia.larosa@nyu.edu and she can assist you.

New Student Orientation will be held on Thursday, August 30th on the 3rd floor of Kimball Hall, 246 Greene Street. All new students must attend this orientation, during which you will receive information about program requirements, job placements, and the degree process. You will meet with the program faculty, as well as with the second year students, and you will be assigned a specific advisor with whom you can discuss your career goals.
You will be added to two list-serves once the fall semester begins. The first listserve is for general information, which serves as a medium for exchange among our students (steinhardt-edsp), while the second listserve focuses on job information and alumni networking (steinhardt-edsp-alumni-jobs).
You can connect with current MA students in our program by joining our facebook group: NYU Education and Social Policy Graduate Program.
I look forward to meeting you.
Sincerely,
Leanna Stiefel
Program Director
