Multinational Institute of American Studies

2011 Multinational Institute of American Studies Alumni Conference

"American National Identity in the Age of Globalization"
March 18-19, 2011
Florence, Italy

The central theme of the conference is "American National Identity in the Age of Globalization." Recent scholarship in the United States tends to regard the nation passively, and much of what is written is not about the U.S., but rather about what happens in the U.S. in the context of global trends. Acting as a proxy for conditions and events that can be found elsewhere, scholars in the U.S. look at small, intimate aspects of social life, or sub-national particulars, rather than supranational patterns. The national history and uniqueness of the U. S. is a relatively neglected area of study. For people in other countries, the U.S. as a nation remains an active protagonist whom they encounter in a variety of ways and whose distinctive national behavior, institutions, culture, and identity, is of great interest. This conference will explore the extent to which American nationality is distinct and the dimensions of "Americanness." It will also consider whether focusing on global aspects of U.S. institutions and culture, or on the distinctive national history of the U.S., best serves the interests of faculty and specialists in other countries who teach and write about the U.S.
