New International Students
International Orientation
New Steinhardt International Graduate Students Fall 2010
STEP 1. CHECK IN WITH THE OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS
• Check in with the OFFICE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS (OISS) to confirm your visa status and to receive information about the OISS Orientation (please click here for more information about mandatory check in with OISS). Always bring your passport, I -94 and SEVIS I -20 when meeting an OISS advisor. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAINTAINING YOUR IMMIGRATION STATUS. Report any change in your local address immediately. For questions regarding your visa status, permission to work, traveling outside the United States, contact: Alison Jackson, 561 LaGuardia Place, 212 998 4720, intl.students.scholars@nyu.edu, www.nyu.edu/oiss
STEP 2. TAKE THE ENGLISH PROFICIENCY EXAM AT THE AMERICAN LANGUAGE INSTITUTE
• If English is not your first language or if you did not graduate from a college or university where English was the language of instruction, it will be necessary to evaluate your proficiency in English. It is your responsibility to be proficient in English in order to meet academic course requirements. Before meeting with NYU Steinhardt Counseling and Student Services staff for pre-advisement (see step 4), call the American Language Institute (ALI) for an appointment, 48 Cooper Square, Room 200, 212 998 7040. The evaluation will cost a fee and it will take approximately two hours. The staff at ALI will provide you with a report for the Student Services Staff as soon as the test is over.
STEP 3. ATTEND A NEW INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE STUDENT INFORMATION SESSION
• Attend one of the following New International Graduate Student Information Sessions (required pre-advisement in order to register) in addition to your departmental orientation:
o Tuesday, June 1st 3pm
o Thursday, July 1st 12pm
o Wednesday, August 18th 1pm
o Monday, August 30th 3pm
o Wednesday, September 1st 1pm
o Friday, September 3rd 10am
o Wednesday, September 8th 3pm
Info sessions are held in the 3rd floor Student Lounge, Pless Hall, 82 Washington Square East. Bring your letter of acceptance as well as your evaluation report from ALI. You will receive information about student services, university resources, the New International Graduate Student Seminar (E03.2003) as well as meet with a staff member to discuss your ALI report.
STEP 4. BEGIN PRE-ADVISEMENT
• The Counseling and Student Services staff will review your ALI examination evaluation and refer you to your academic advisor who will review your degree requirements and help you select your courses.
PLEASE NOTE: If your visa status is F-1 or J-1, you are required to register for full-time study, 12 credits or more unless you are taking courses at ALI. If you are required to take classes at the ALI, it may take more time than you had originally expected to finish your required studies, and there will be additional tuition charges. Courses taken at ALI are designed to improve your proficiency in English; they do not count as credits toward degree requirements. If you are attending NYU as an F-1 or J-1 student, you must obtain permission from OISS in order to register for an ALI course in your first semester while you are also registered for at least 6 academic credits in your program. After your first semester (if an F-1 or J-1 visa holder) you must register for at least 12 credits as well as whatever ALI course your academic program requires.
