What is the deadline for the application?

MA Program: Fall-February 1; Spring-November 1

PhD Program (fall only): December 15

Is the GRE required?

The GRE is required for the PhD program but is not required for the MA or Advanced Certificate programs. However, if you choose to submit scores with your application, they will be considered with your application.

Do I need to submit letters of recommendation?

Three letters of recommendation are required for the PhD program. While letters of recommendation are not required for the MA or Advanced Certificate programs, we recommend you submit two letters from professors or former employers from the last three years.

Can I apply online?

Yes, the online application is available on the Office of Admissions website: http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/graduate_admissions/

Where do I send the paper application and/or supplementary materials, such as letters of recommendation and transcripts?

Can I have the application fee waived?

The Office of Graduate Admissions handles free waiver requests. Please contact that office directly at 212 998 5030 or Steinhardt.gradadmissions@nyu.edu

What are the TOEFL requirements?

Successful candidates have typically scored at 100 or above on the Internet-based test: 250 or above on the Computer-based test: or 600 or above on the Paper-based test.

What is the GPA requirement?

Successful MA candidates have typically achieved at least a 3.0 undergraduate GPA.

Are scholarships available?

Yes. Information on scholarships is listed on the website for financial aid. http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/financial_aid/

All applicants who are interested in being considered for school-based scholarships MUST complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by going to www.fafsa.ed.gov and submitting it electronically to NYU.  Detailed instructions can be found on the Graduate Admissions web pages at www.steinhardt.nyu.edu/financial.aid The deadline for having submitted the form to NYU is February 1 for the summer/fall enrollment or November 1 for spring enrollment. Please note that the earliest time you can access the form is January 1.

Is an interview required for admissions?

No.

What are the qualifications for admissions? Do I need a BA in International Education, international work experience, or teacher certifications?

There are no specific requirements for admissions into the program. Qualified applicants have experience ranging from travel and work overseas, hands-on experience in education, and coursework in related fields.

When can I attend an open house?

Open houses are hosted twice a year, once per semester. We do not host open houses during the summer. These dates will be posted the semester prior the event. For fall open house dates, check the website in August; for spring open house dates, check the website in December.

I cannot attend the open house. Can I still meet with an advisor or faculty member to discuss the program?

Yes, send an email to cse3@nyu.edu to request an appointment with an advisor or faculty member.

I live far away and cannot meet with an advisor or faculty member in person. Can I make a phone appointment?

Yes, send an email to cse3@nyu.edu to request a phone appointment with an advisor or faculty member.

How long does it take to complete the MA program?

The program can be completed in 3 semesters if you are enrolled full-time. However, the majority of the classes are offered in the evenings to accommodate students who enroll part-time.

How many students are enrolled in the MA program?

There are between 90 and 100 MA students enrolled in the program.

Can I work full-time and still take classes?

Yes, the majority of classes are offered in the evenings to accommodate working students.

What is the difference between an MA and an Advanced Certificate?

The certificate program is intended for people who are interested in receiving a formal degree in the field but do not want to pursue a PhD. Some students are currently working in the field and would like a degree, other than an MA, documenting that they have a formal background in this study. Other students use the degree as a stepping stone for a PhD program.

Can I do an internship while I am enrolled?

Yes, we require all students complete an internship. For more information on placement organizations, see attached link. If I completed the Peace Corps and/or have extensive experience working abroad, can this experience count towards the internship requirement?

No, students cannot waive the internship requirement.

Is there a language requirement for admissions into the program?

No.

Can I complete the degree from overseas?

No. You must be enrolled as a student at NYU in New York City in order to complete the degree.

I'd like to speak with a current MA student to learn more about the program. Who can I contact?

On the International Education website, there is a link for "MA Student Profiles." This link provides the contact information of current MA students, including recent work experience, specialization, and area study. If I take courses during the summer at another institution, can the credits transfer towards the MA degree?

Yes, you can transfer up to 6 credits towards the MA degree. However, these credits cannot be applied towards the core requirements. (Core requirements: http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/humsocsci/international/ma) To receive approval for transfer credits, you need to submit a catalogue description of the course, including a syllabus, to the program director, Dr. Phil Hosay, at pmh2@nyu.edu for approval.

What supplementary materials are required in the application?

We strongly recommend 2 letters of recommendation. If you have published articles and would like to include these documents in your application, you can include a short excerpt.

Can you mail an information packet on the program to my home address?

We do not send materials via mail. Detailed information about the MA degree can be found on the program website, ttp://steinhardt.nyu.edu/humsocsci/international/, including course requirements, internship information, course schedules, job placements, grant materials, faculty biographies, and contact information for current students. After reviewing the website, if you have additional questions, please email Carly Einstein at cse3@nyu.edu.

I am planning to visit campus and would like to attend a class. When is the best time for me to do this?

We do not offer classes on Fridays. If you would like to attend a class, please email Carly Einstein at cse3nyu.edu.

When will I receive a decision from NYU?

You will receive a decision from the admissions office within 4-6 weeks of receipt of your application. If you have not received a response within this time frame, please contact them directly at (212) 998 - 5030 or Steinhardt.gradadmissions@nyu.edu.

I live overseas and snail mail is inconsistent. Can the admissions decision be emailed to me?
