James W. Fraser, Professor of History and Education at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University, holds a joint appointment in the departments of Humanities & Social Sciences and Teaching and Learning. Fraser’s teaching and research is motivated by his concern with the challenges facing future Social Studies and History teachers who must find ways of engaging sometimes bored students with American and world history. His most recent book, By the People: A History of the United States is designed to help make U.S. History courses more lively with a focus on the agency of everyday Americans of many different communities, times, and places. Fraser’s work also reflects his concern with complex debates about the place of religion in public schools, especially in the United States, but also internationally. He has written, taught, and consulted about the state of teacher education in the United States and elsewhere and also written and spoken about the future of the History of Education as an academic field of study. Fraser is the president of the History of Education Society for 2013-2014. He has served on the Editorial Board of the History of Education Quarterly and as the NYU liaison to New Design High School, a public high school in New York’s Lower East Side, and to Facing History and Ourselves. He is Director of Undergraduate Studies in the NYU Department of Teaching and Learning and serves on the committees responsible for the NYU programs in London, England and Accra, Ghana.

 

Harold Wechsler

Harold Wechsler co-directs NYU's Ph.D. program in Education and Jewish Studies. He has published widely on access, governance, business education, and the formation of curriculum and disciplines in American higher education. His books include: Jewish Learning in American Universities: The First Century (with Paul Ritterband), Access to Success in the Urban High School: The Middle College MovementThe Transfer Challenge, and The Qualified Student: A History of Selective College Admission in America, 1870-1970. He edits the annual Almanac of Higher Education for the National Education Association and coedits the ASHE Reader on the History of Higher Education (with Linda Eisenmann and Lester Goodchild). Wechsler formerly chaired the higher education programs at the University of Chicago and Northwestern University, and was editor of higher education publications for the National Education Association. Sponsored by a major Spencer Foundation grant, Wechsler currently studies the history of minority access to American higher education. The Ford Foundation and Littauer Foundation sponsored previous projects. He is a former president of the History of Education Society, a former member of the executive committee of the Academic Council of the American Jewish Historical Society, and the winner of the Greatest Mets Fan competition (1969).

Jonathan Zimmerman is Professor of Education and History and Director of the History of Education Program, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. He also holds an appointment in the Department of History of NYU's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. A former Peace Corps volunteer and high school teacher, Zimmerman is the author ofSmall Wonder: The Little Red Schoolhouse in History and Memory (Yale, 2009),Innocents Abroad: American Teachers in the American Century (Harvard, 2006),Whose America? Culture Wars in the Public Schools (Harvard, 2002), andDistilling Democracy: Alcohol Education in America's Public Schools, 1880-1925 (Kansas, 1999). His academic articles have appeared in the Journal of American History, the Teachers College Record, and History of Education Quarterly. Zimmerman is also a frequent op-ed contributor to the New York Times, the Washington Post, the New Republic, and other popular newspapers and magazines.

 

Joan Malczewski

Joan Malczewski conducts research on the relationship between northern philanthropy and southern education history, specifically focusing on the development of public education for rural blacks in the early twentieth century and state building. She has served as Assistant Dean at Teachers College from 1995-2001 and at the Steinhardt School of Education from 2003-2006. Malczewski received her Ph.D. in history and education from Columbia University in 2002. She teaches in the Department of Teaching and Learning, the Department of Applied Statistics, Social Science, and Humanities, and the Department of Administration, Leadership and Technology.
