A graduate of Barnard College, Boyum received both her MA and PhD degrees from New York University. She began her teaching career at NYU as a member of the faculty of the English Department in the College of Arts and Sciences, moving subsequently to the Department of the English Education, then to the Department of Culture and Communication where she taught courses in Media and Media Theory, and finally to the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences where she teaches various courses in aesthetic theory, film, and the interrelated arts.

  • From 1971-1991, Boyum was film critic for The Wall Street Journal, Glamour Magazine, Us and NPR's All Things Considered, and has written for such other newspapers and journals as Rolling Stone, Newsday, The Chicago Tribune, Science Digest, Working Mother,

  • Film and literature, with a particular focus on adaptation, and critical theory, with special attention to reader-response criticism.
