Joan Malczewski conducts research on the relationship between northern philanthropy and southern education history, specifically focusing on the development of public education for rural blacks in the early twentieth century. She has served as Assistant Dean at Teachers College from 1995-2001 and at the Steinhardt School of Education from 2003-2006. Malczewski received her Ph.D. in history and education from Columbia University in 2002. She teaches in the Department of Teaching and Learning, the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences in the Professions, and the Department of Administration, Leadership and Technology.
