Erin Murphy-Graham is interested in the role education plays in promoting or inhibiting social change. Her research and teaching focus on three areas: the role education in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment, the expansion and reform of secondary education in Latin America, and the connection between research and policy. Her current research project, funded by a grant from the Hewlett Foundation ($1.2 million), is a mixed-methods impact evaluation of the alternative secondary education program Sistema de Aprendizaje Tutorial (Tutorial Learning System) in Honduras. Her research appears in journals including Gender and Education, Prospects Journal of International Education, and the American Journal of Evaluation. Prior to joining the faculty at NYU, she was a faculty member at University of California, Berkeley, where she taught courses on globalization and international education and gender and education. Murphy-Graham has worked as an educational consultant to government agencies and NGOs in Honduras, Colombia and Nicaragua. She received her doctorate in International Education from Harvard University, an M.Sc. in Comparative and International Education from Oxford University, and her BA in International Relations and Spanish from Tufts University.
