Abstract: In his book, The Best of the Best: Becoming Elite at an American Boarding School, Gaztambide-Fernández outlines the process by which elite status is produced. Drawing on two years of ethnographic research at one of the most prestigious elite boarding schools in the United States, he describes the process through which students at an elite boarding school internalize their privilege. While all students come to internalize a sense of “distinction” and entitlement, elite status is not equally distributed. Not surprisingly, the internal hierarchies of elite status reflect broader dynamics of exclusion along social categories of race, class, and gender. In this talk, Gaztambide-Fernández will focus on these dynamics, outline the ways in which elite status is unequally distributed, and offer a critique of the discourses of inclusion and diversity and how they operate to justify status hierarchies.
Rubén A. Gaztambide-Fernández 
is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto. He earned his doctorate in 2006 from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Gaztambide-Fernández’s research and scholarship are concerned with questions of symbolic boundaries and the dynamics of cultural production and processes of identification in educational contexts. He draws on cultural studies, postcolonial and feminist theory, and critical sociology to inform his understanding of curriculum and pedagogy as encounters with difference. His current research focuses on the experiences of young artists attending urban arts high schools in Canada and the United States. His most recent book, The Best of the Best: Becoming Elite at An American Boarding School (2009) is based on two years of ethnographic research at an elite boarding school in the United States. He has published articles on the arts in education, elite schooling, curriculum theory, and popular culture in journals like the Review of Educational Research, the Harvard Educational ReviewCurriculum InquiryThe Review of Education/Pedagogy/Cultural Studies, and the Journal of Curriculum and Pedagogy. He is also co-editor of the collections Cultural Studies and Education: Perspectives on Theory, Methodology, and Practice (with Heather Harding and Tere Sordé-Martí, 2004, Harvard Education Press), Curriculum Work as a Public Moral Enterprise (with James T. Sears, 2004, Rowman and Littlefield), and the forthcoming collection Educating Elites (with Adam Howard, 2010, Rowman and Littlefield).

Dr. Weis is author, co-author or editor of numerous books and articles that focus on race, class and gender in American schools. Her most recent publications include, Class Reunion: The Remaking of the American White Working Class (Routledge), Working Method: Research and Social Justice (Routledge), Beyond Silenced Voices: Class, Race and Gender in United States Schools, revised edition (SUNY), The Unknown City: The lives of Poor and Working Class Young Adults (Beacon).

Dr. Weis is Past President of the American Educational Studies Association and is on the editorial boards of several journals, including Educational Policy, International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, and Review of Educational Research.
Dr. Weis was awarded the rank of SUNY Distinguished Professor, the highest faculty rank in the State University of New York system. In 2008, she was named editor of the American Educational Research Journal.

The title of Marci's talk is: Encounters and Mis-Encounters with Choice: Immigrant Parents and Educational Choice

Abstract: At a time of broad expansion of school choice policies, we know little about how immigrant families make educational decisions for their children. My work addresses this gap. Drawing on an in-depth ethnographic study conducted over 18 months in 2006-2008 at two large New York City elementary schools, I argue that immigrant families are variably positioned to participate in and win at the game of educational choice. I specify this variation and consider its implications for choice programs and for education policy generally.

Steven Waldman is a co-founder and past president of Beliefnet, the largest online community centered on spirituality.  Waldman resigned from Beliefnet in October to lead a new federal government effort assessing government policy about media and information technology, the Future of the Media Initiative.  He will join the Federal Communications Commission as Senior Advisor to the Chairman.

Prior to launching Beliefnet, Waldman served as national editor of US News and World Report and was a national correspondent for Newsweek .  His work has appeared in numerous publications including The Wall Street Journal , The New York Times , and the Washington Monthly , and he authored the bestseller Founding Faith: Providence, Politics, and the Birth of Religious Freedom in America .
