WHAT'S NEW!!
National Health Education Week
National Health Education Week will be observed October 15-21, 2001. It
has been observed annually during the third week in October since the early 1990s and is
officially recognized by the Department of Health and Human Services.
The purpose of the celebration is to focus national attention on health education and a
public health problem in which health education is a major prevention and/or treatment
strategy. This year, in addition to promoting health education the profession, the
specific health topic is asthma
prevention and treatment.
This year's theme has been selected by the primary sponsors (the National
Center for Health Education and the Society for Public health Education)
because it is a growing and significant public health issue, especially
among the nation's youth. The National Institutes of Health estimates
that asthma effects approximately 15 million people in this country, 5
million of who are under the age of 18. In addition, asthma prevalence is
on the rise: between 19890 and 1994, asthma rates have increased by 74%
among those between the ages of 5 and 14.
