WHAT'S NEW!!
The Advocacy Institute is now accepting applications for the 2001 Leadership Fellows
Program.
The Leadership Fellows Program is an in-residence leadership development and capacity
building retreat for tobacco control professionals and volunteers. Designed for
experienced advocates, the Program deepens the participants' understanding of their own
advocacy experience and allows them to build supportive relationships with their
colleagues. The Leadership Fellows Program is not a traditional skills training.
Through facilitated exchange, the Program explores topics such as leadership roles,
strategic analysis and planning, organizational development, strategic communication,
alliance and coalition building, conflict resolution, and policy advocacy.
Two classes of 15 Leadership Fellows each will be selected for the 2001
Program, which will be held in Washington, DC. Class 1 will meet September 30 -
October 5, 2001 and Class 2 will meet October 21-26, 2001.
The Leadership Fellows Program is designed for tobacco control leaders who:
* Are directly involved in tobacco control advocacy;
* Have attended basic advocacy skills trainings (e.g. the
Centers
for Disease Control Tobacco Use Prevention Institute,
the
SmokeLess States Annual Meeting, National Conference on
Tobacco
and Health, or other similar trainings);
* Seek advanced capacity building opportunities;
* Have a deep commitment to tobacco control; and
* Have support from their organization to engage in advocacy
and
to transfer what they learn in the Program to others.
The Program will be of particular interest to SmokeLess States grantees,
professionals who work at voluntary health agencies, including the American Cancer
Society, American Heart Association and American Lung Association, and leaders of
national, state and local tobacco control coalitions and programs.
The Leadership Fellows Program is funded by a grant from the National
Training and Technical Assistance Consortium. All expenses related to
participation will be covered, including transportation, hotel and meals.
The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, April 20, 2001.
