WHAT'S NEW!!
ACTION KIT FOR HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IS RELEASED
The United States is facing a national crisis of obesity and related
conditions among children. Poor and minority children are the most
likely to suffer from these conditions. These conditions, including
diabetes, have an impact on children's school attendance and therefore
on their opportunities to learn. These children are also more likely to
be in schools where students do not have a clean, comfortable place to
eat lunch, where lunch is rushed and crowded, where junk food is sold as
fundraisers, and where appropriate physical activity programs have been
cut. The school nutrition environment can play a crucial role in helping
to assure that children can arrive in school fit, healthy and ready to
learn.
To address the challenges of ensuring a sound school nutrition
environment the United States Department of Agriculture, Food and
Nutrition Service has recently released "Changing the Scene, Improving
the School Nutrition Environment," an action kit to promote healthy
eating and physical activity by addressing nutrition issues in schools.
It includes a guide to local action with definitions of success, ideas
on how to make changes and a variety of resource materials. It is
available free to anyone interested in improving school nutrition
environment.
CCSSO was one of a number of national education organizations that
worked with Food and Nutrition Service to review and sponsor the kit.
We encourage our members to order copies of the kit and disseminate
information about the kit to local districts and schools.
The kit can be ordered online at www.fns.usda.gov/tn/Healthy/changing.html.
