Kristen Casano, President

Hello! My name is Kristen Casano and I am delighted to serve as the GSO President this year. I am a second-year graduate student in the Higher Education and Student Affairs program. I enjoy working with students, and I am currently a graduate assistant in the NYU Center for Student Activities, Leadership, and Service (CSALS). I completed my undergraduate degree in Science and Technology Studies at the NYU School of Engineering. I am always here to answer your questions, so do not hesitate to contact me!

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Presides at and coordinates the agenda for the Board and Council meetings
  • Represents the GSO at various meetings, including the Steinhardt Faculty Meetings and the University Committee on Student Life (UCSL) meetings
  • Oversees all GSO related matters and delegates assignments to Board members

Gee Salas, Vice President

Hi, my name is Gee Salas, and I will be serving as the Vice President for Steinhardt GSO this year. I am a second-year graduate student in the School Counseling K-12 program under the Applied Psychology department. I am originally from the Bay Area in California. I attended the University of California-Santa Cruz (go Banana Slugs) where I graduated with a bachelors degree in Sociology and was a student organizer for the Filipino Student Association. Prior to NYU I was a college adviser for the national program College Advising Corps in affiliation with the University of California-Berkeley. I am highly interested in helping first-generation students, like myself, pursue pathways in college and career. As a student organizer I look forward to serving my fellow students and enhancing their graduate experience through collaboration. Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the liaison between club and department representatives
  • Conducts elections and executive board appointment processes
  • Represents the GSO on the Faculty Affairs Council

Armando Figueroa, Senator

Hello! My name is Armando Figueroa and I am proud to be serving as the Senator for Steinhardt GSO. I am a first year Master's student in Steinhardt's Higher Education Student Affairs program. I am from Los Angeles, California and went to the University of California, Davis for my undergraduate degree in Sociology and Chicano Studies with a minor in Latin American Hemispheric Studies. My interests include supporting underrepresented students, mobilizing student activism and empowering youth through outreach. In addition to my role as Senator, I am also the graduate assistant for the office of Undergraduate Admissions here at NYU where I serve as a proud member of the Diversity Initiatives team. I look forward to hearing from you, your ambitions to get involved, and how we can together utilize our power as students.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Represents the GSO at University Senate/Student Senators Council (SSC), School Senate, and University Committee on Student Life (UCSL)
  • Reports to the Board and Council members at the regular meetings the current issues of concern before the NYU Senate, School Senate, and the UCSL
  • Simultaneously is a member of the School Senate and coordinates the activities of all graduate student representatives to the School Senate

Tim Zhang, Treasurer

Hello! My name is Tim Zhang, it is my pleasure to serve as the GSO Treasurer this year. I am a first-year graduate student in the Higher Education and Student Affairs program. Prior to NYU, I pursued my bachelor's degrees in Communication Studies B.A., Human Resource Development B.S. minor in Leadership at the University of Minnesota (Go gophers!). I am currently a graduate assistant at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering in the Office of Student Activities and Resource Center. Activities and organizations related to student life have been a part of my daily life for the past four years. I love to work with students and to enhance their campus life experience. Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Plans the budget for the year
  • Tracks and updates the Board on the budget
  • Works with department representatives, executive board members, and Competitive Professional Development Reimbursement Fund winners on fund reimbursement 

Randi Amalfitano, Secretary 

Hi! My name is Randi Amalfitano and I'm thrilled to be serving a second term on GSO, this time as your secretary. I am a second year part-time student in the Higher Education and Student Affairs program with the hopes of working with student clubs and leadership, especially Greek Life. I currently work at NYU Law in the Office of Career Services; we help future lawyers get employed! I graduated from NYU in 2014 with a B.A. in English, Creative Writing, and Psychology.   • Keeps minutes at all board and council meetings 
  • Records attendance records and tallies votes during board and council meetings 
  • May attend school standing committee meetings, or represent GSO at other events/meetings

Maggie Li, Publicity Chair

Hello! I am Maggie and I am excited to serve as the Publicity Chair for the second term this year. I am a second-year graduate student in the Digital Media Design for Learning program. Prior to NYU, I achieved my undergraduate degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language back in my hometown, Shanghai. I always enjoy being involved in student work and am willing to help all the time. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

JJ Wu, Publicity Chair 

Hi! My name is JJ and I’m beyond excited to be joining the GSO executive board as Publicity Chair for the new school year. Prior to starting my graduate studies at Steinhardt, I completed my bachelor's degree in psychology at McGill University. I have always enjoyed working in school settings and have experience in working with youth of different age groups. As I will be overseeing all GSO’s social media accounts, do not hesitate to contact me if you want to promote any news or events. My current hobbies include eating and photography so feel free to email me if you need an event photographer for your events on/off campus.

Allie Brodeur, Events Coordinator 

Greetings. My name is Allie and I'm a second year graduate student in the Higher Education and Student Affairs program. I'm from the great state of Connecticut and I work in the Center for Student Activities, Leadership, and Service (CSALS) where I advise the Multicultural Greek Council. I'm ecstatic about positive energy and GSO events, and there's about to be ton of both. How do I know? Because I'm bringing them to you live as this year's Events Coordinator. Or as I like to call it, your good times specialist. So if you're ready to connect with your Steinhardt peers, destress from your course load, or just enjoy a great time, come along for the ride and I'll see you at our next event.

Steve Xie, Events Coordinator 

Greetings, y’all. Steve Xie here, first-year Master’s student in the Music Therapy Program and excited to serve as the Events Coordinator for the GSO this year. I graduated from Vassar College in 2015 where I studied psychology, music, and economics. Please don’t hesitate to reach out as I’m always on the lookout for new ways for grad students to become involved in campus activities. Or, if you’d just like to chat about music and the media, I’m all ears, too. I am also serving as the Representative for the Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions, so feel free to send over an email if you’ve got any questions concerning the department, or just to say what’s up/hello. Nakia Gray-Nicolas, Doctoral Student Representative 

Hi! My name is Nakia Gray-Nicolas and I am excited to serve as the Doctoral Student Representative. I am currently a doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership, where my focus is on interrogating the purpose and effectiveness of, and access to pre-college transition programs. I am also currently a college lecturer. In the future, I hope to pursue an academic career and also continue to do research on programs and interventions in high school and college contexts that promote academic persistence and success.
