Each year, the Steinhardt Graduate Student Organization honors outstanding students, faculty, administrators, and staff members across Steinhardt.  If there is a member of the Steinhardt community that has positively affected your experience, please nominate them for this special award by filling out a nomination formThe awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday, May 2, at the NYU Torch Club.  Thank you for helping to recognize the amazing work, talent, and commitment of these amazing members of the Steinhardt community!


ANNUAL STUDENT ELECTIONS

* Run for a Position on the GSO Exec Board
 - Deadline: Wednesday, March 21, 2012

Do you want to get involved in student leadership?  Do you want to take on the challenge of connecting, supporting, and representing grad students from all of the various programs at Steinhardt?  You should run for a position on the GSO Executive Board in the upcoming student elections!

All positions are available for the 2012-2013 academic year.  Please check the GSO website for a description of each position's responsibilities.  If you are interested in running for a position, please email steinhardt.gso@nyu.edu and include your name, N number, and a short statement of 250 words or less regarding why you should be elected.

The deadline to submit your candidacy bid is Wednesday, March 21.  The student election process will take place from Monday, April 2, through Friday, April 13.  For more information about the elections process or the GSO, please attend the next Town Hall meeting on Tuesday, March 6, at 7:30pm in the Pless Hall First Floor Lounge.

Steinhardt GSO presents:
MLK Oratorical Event
February 7, 2012; 7 to 9 pm

Submit a speech or dramatic performance in which you reflect and comment on the life and work of Dr. King. This is meant to be a forum in which you recognize and remember Dr. King's powerful oratorical style, and demonstrate your relationship with the work of Dr. King and the enduring legacy left by his efforts.
This event is open to the all NYU graduate and undergraduate students. Speeches and Performances must be original work or a creative interpretation of an existing work. The categories include: oral speech, written speech, dance, musical, dramatic, and spoken word.

Performance must not exceed seven (7) minutes.  Description of dramatic performance needs to describe what type of performance you’ll be doing (e.g., dance, theater, spoken word, video), how many people will be performing, and what equipment you’ll be using (e.g., radio, iPod, CD player). Descriptions must not exceed 750 words/5000 characters. You may expand later as long as your performance does not go over the seven (7) minute time limit.

Selected finalists will perform the night of the event and compete for a Kindle and gift cards! The winner of the contest will have the chance to perform at the signature event during NYU's MLK Week that takes place the following Thursday.

OCCUPY WALL ST. FORUM 

Wednesday, November 9 - Pless Hall 1st Floor Lounge, 3-5pm

3-4pm will feature a panel of speakers who will provide varying perspectives and answer questions from antendees. 4-5pm will provide an opportunity for students to participate in various exercises and engage in dialogue. Light refreshments will be provided, stop by and check it out!

Robert Cohen
Robert Cohen is a professor of history and social studies at NYU Steinhardt. His historical scholarship focuses on politics, higher education, and social protest in twentieth century America.

Salvatore Fallica
Professor Sal Fallica teachers courses in propaganda and popular culture in the Department of Media, Culture and Communications. His research interests include the history and development of political advertising, the role popular culture plays in political culture.  

Helga Tawil-Souri
Helga Tawil-Souri is a professor in the Media, Culture, and Communications department at NYU Steinhardt. Her scholarship is on globalization, media technologies, cultural expressions and their relationship to economic and political change in the Middle East.

 GSO's First Career Day!

    GSO's 1st ever Career Day! Thursday, March 24th.  6:15-8:00PM Kimmel Room 912

Wondering where your Steinhardt Graduate Degree may take you? Well...Steinhardt GSO invites you to attend its first ever career night!!! Come and hear from the Pros (literally) as they share their stories and give advice on how to pursue specific careers after receiving a professional graduate degree! With graduation around the corner you'll also get helpful tips and advice for interviews, resume, and cover letter writing from the Wasserman Center!

Event Details: Students will have the opportunity to select 3-4 speakers (15 minutes each meeting) to sit with in an intimate round table setting. Here you will have the chance to ask specific questions of your interest or simply hear what the speaker has to share. This event will also serve as a great networking opportunity to students across departments!*Business Casual Attire suggested*

The Steinhardt Undergraduate and Graduate Student Governments are thrilled to present the Spring Steinhardt Day of Service. It serves as a fun opportunity for Steinhardt students to volunteer and get involved with their surrounding NYC communities while also engaging with members of our very own Steinhardt Community. Eligibility: ALL NYU Students (Steinhardt, Wagner, Stern, Law, CAS, GSAS, Med, Gallatin, Social Work, Tisch, etc. ) are invited to participate each year.

In August 1963, the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., told the world, "I have a dream." More than forty years later, the dream lives on in many forms. This contest establishes a tradition at NYU that will honor this dream through your voice. This is meant to be a forum for you to reflect and comment on the life and work of Dr. King.

There are two categories: (1) Speech and (2) Dramatic Performance. Your speech or dramatic performance should aim to recognize and remember Dr. King's powerful oratorical style and demonstrate your relationship with the work of Dr. King and others in the Civil Rights movement and the enduring legacy left by their efforts.

All speeches or dramatic performances addressed the theme of the 2010 NYU MLK Celebration Week, "Who will you inspire to dream?" or the contest's specific theme, "Preserve the past in order to advance the future." Special prizes will be awarded for the excellent work of the participants.

WE WON THIRD PLACE!!! Steinhardt (Super) Grads Rock!!!

Join the Steinhardt GSO Team!!! We won the color PURPLE this year, and all team members will receive a Steinhardt GSO t-shirt for participating. Participation includes a $1 donation at the time of the event that will go towards Haiti relief. Steinhardt placed last year in the games, so lets keep it up! Competitive foosball anyone?
