2008 Graduation
On May 14th, Steinhardt baccalaureate, master's, certificate, and doctoral graduates joined thousands of other NYU students and their families at Yankee Stadium for the all-University Commencement ceremonies. The ceremony included a major address, speeches by an undergraduate and a graduate student, the awarding of honorary degrees to a number of distinguished individuals, and the conferring of degrees and certificates. Deans of each School introduced each class as a whole, and a representative selected in advance received a symbolic diploma for each degree category.
NYU Steinhardt recognized its students who completed their coursework in September 2007, January 2008, and May 2008 at three individual ceremonies:

Monday, May 12th, the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development faculty hooded
88 new doctoral degree graduates at the Doctoral Convocation, held in NYU's Skirball Center
for the Performing Arts. The program included remarks by Steinhardt Deans Brabeck and Robin, NYU
Provost David McLaughlin, Professor Karen D. King, Distinguished Alumni Achievement Awardee Giacomo
Oliva, Ed.D. '80, and Doctoral graduate Zoë Burkholder. More than 800 relatives, friends,
and colleagues joined the graduates for the ceremony and reception.

Valedictory Celebration

than 750 masters and advanced certificate graduates participated in the Steinhardt School of Culture,
Education, and Human Development Valedictory Celebration on Tuesday, May 13th. The Theater at Radio
City Music Hall was filled with proud and enthusiastic parents, grandparents, spouses, children
and friends. The program included remarks by Dean Mary Brabeck, Chief of Staff and Deputy to the
President Diane Yu, Professor Carlo Lamagna, Distinguished Achievement Awardee Robert Jarvik, M.D.
(Occupational Health and Safety, MA '71), and master's graduate Christine Rhee. The ceremony
concluded with a rousing rendition of a Steinhardt favorite, "New York, New York" by
the Steinhardt Music Theatre Ensemble.

Baccalaureate Ceremony

than 500 baccalaureate graduates in applied psychology, art, communication, education, health,
and music participated in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development Baccalaureate
Celebration on Tuesday, May 13th at Radio City Music Hall in midtown Manhattan. The 6000-seat theatre
was filled to capacity with proud and cheering relatives and friends. The program included remarks
by Dean Mary Brabeck, President John Sexton, Professor Gigliana Melzi, Distinguished Achievement
Awardee Sheila Lukins, B.F.A. '70, and baccalaureate graduate Lisa M. Vasfailo. The ceremony
included personal handshakes on stage for each graduating student and was punctuated by the sounds
of the NYU Brass Ensemble, the NYU Pipes and Drums, and the Music Theatre Ensemble. The ceremony
concluded with a rousing rendition of a Steinhardt favorite, "New York, New York."
