Admissions Requirements

In order to apply to this dual-degree program, you must:

  • Be a current, matriculated undergraduate in NYU College of Arts and Science,
  • Have declared an approved CAS major (English, History, Mathematics, or Science)
  • Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Have completed a minimum of three semesters in CAS (transfer students must have completed a minimum of one semester)
  • Have a minimum of two semesters remaining prior to graduation (one Fall and one Spring). Students may not submit a pre-application to the Teacher Education track during their final two semesters.

NYU Steinhardt’s admission process seeks to identify individuals who have the potential to do advanced graduate-level work, a demonstrated potential for teaching, and an interest in urban education through relevant coursework in their subject area and extracurricular volunteer or work experience with children or youth, such as tutoring independently or through a sponsored program like America Reads/Counts, being a camp counselor, or working in an after-school program.

Unfortunately, we cannot perform a transcript review prior to you applying to our program. Transcripts will be reviewed in detail, as part of the application process, by the Admissions Committee.

How to Apply

These instructions and requirements are for all applicants. If you are not a citizen or a permanent resident of the United States, please read the special instructions for international applicants.

1. Prepare Your Application

The application process for this dual degree consists of two parts:

First, submit an online pre-application form after you complete three semesters of study in CAS (one semester for transfer students). The priority deadline for submitting this form is October 19 for Fall 2015 and March 21 for Spring 2016.

For formal admission to Steinhardt, you must also submit the Steinhardt graduate application prior to graduating from CAS. Admission to any of the BA/MA Teacher Education tracks does not guarantee admission to Steinhardt.

Your graduate application to NYU Steinhardt. will require the following items. The following are acceptable document types for uploads: .pdf, .jpeg, .jpg, .gif, .tiff, .png, .doc, .docx, and bitmap.

Résumé/CV

You are required to upload a copy of your most recent résumé or curriculum vitae as part of your application.

Statement of Purpose

You are required to upload a typed, double-spaced, two- to three-page statement explaining your purpose in undertaking graduate study in this particular program as part of your application. This is your opportunity to introduce yourself and to inform the admissions committee about your goals, interests, and career plans as they relate to your intended academic pursuits.

Letters of Recommendation

Submit two letters of recommendation. Be sure to request them well in advance of the deadline. Read detailed instructions.

Transcripts

Upload one official copy of transcripts from every postsecondary school you have attended. Make sure to request them in advance of the deadline. See detailed instructions.

GRE or MAT

New York State requires that candidates for teacher education and educational leadership programs leading to certification submit standardized test scores as part of the application process.

Applicants to this program must submit official scores from the GRE or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) by the application deadline.

As with all materials you submit, your GRE or MAT test scores will be viewed in a holistic light, and will not outweigh other indicators of your academic and personal qualifications to be a teacher or school leader. See how to submit scores for the GRE and the MAT

Please check the online system to confirm that you have successfully submitted your application. Due to the volume of applications and related materials received, the Office of Graduate Admissions will only contact you if your application was successfully submitted and is deemed incomplete because of missing required materials. Otherwise, you will hear from us when the admissions committee has made its decision.
