Degree Programs with a Global Component
Just as the campus at Washington Square was founded to be "in and of the city," so New York University defines its cosmopolitan character as the first truly global network university, fulfilling a commitment to increase the flow of ideas to be "in and of the world." NYU programs and resources at the Washington Square campus in New York City support the cultural engagement of students with the international environment in which they live and learn.
Below are highlights of some of our academic programs on Washington Square that incorporate a strong global perspective in faculty research, course offerings, or student mobility.
Art and Art Professions is closely tied to the international art world in all its dimensions. Coursework in New York is deeply informed by these connections. The department offers a wide array of opportunities for global engagement, whether a student leaves New York or not. The Global Visual Art Minor combines course work from Washington Square and NYU’s Center’s abroad. The two-semester Global Studies Track allows undergraduates to study in both Berlin and Ghana. Students take advantage of intensive studio-based programs in Venice or Prague , Art Therapy in Brazil , or Arts Administration in the Netherlands + Germany
Educational Theatre - The program features a deep commitment to community engagement on a global scale through applied theatre. Distinctive study abroad options bring NYU students into conversation and collaboration with artists and master teachers in New York, Dublin and San Juan, Puerto Rico .
Bilingual Education - The NYU programs in Bilingual Education affirm the value of heritage, languages and cultures and take an additive view of second language acquisition. We prepare teachers to engage with students around the world and in New York City’s multicultural and multilingual classrooms. The program features a summer study abroad opportunity in Shanghai, China.
Foreign Language Education - Programs are designed to prepare teachers, researchers and curriculum developers in Foreign Language Education at all levels, including a substantial field-based component. Our programs are based on communicative methods of second language pedagogy and a reflective model of teaching which incorporates collaboration with colleagues, students, and community. Available programs include Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, Spanish. A distinctive joint-GSAS and Steinhardt degree program in Teaching French as a Foreign Language takes place in Paris (year one) and New York (year two) .
Higher and Postsecondary Education - As universities, colleges and other higher education institutions undergo a radical transformation in our age of globalization, the program explore current trends in higher education through cutting-edge course work such as “Globalization and Higher Education Reforms”. Study abroad options include “Global Perspectives on Higher Education,” a moveable course that has taken place in India, Israel and Brazil.
International Education - Steinhardt’s Master’s and Doctoral degree programs prepare leaders for study abroad, cross-cultural exchange and international development education. Cutting-edge course work at NYU Washington Square and around the world includes “Globalization and Education,” “Teaching Toward International Understanding,” and “United Nations at Work.” A new field-based internship program allows students to do international development work connected to NGOs in Jodhpur, India .
Music and Performing Arts Professions - Students from around the world come to New York City to study classic American art forms such as Jazz and Broadway Musical Theater, and to train in the international forms of classical music and performance. NYU Music undergraduates have the rich and rare opportunity to engage in specialized music training in symphonic and ensemble music performance, opera, theatre, jazz, composition, film scoring, music business, and music technology Prague and Florence . Graduate students in the Music Business program engage with the fast-paced and ever changing world of Global Music Management in London .
TESOL Program prepares teachers for careers around the world and in the United States. A distinguishing study abroad option allows MA students to examine “Culture and Language Learning in Real Time” in the Dominican Republic .
Media Culture and Communication is at the forefront of innovative scholarship and teaching. Faculty research and the curriculum emphasizes the study of global media and culture, digital media and new technologies, visual culture, and globalization. Extending their course work beyond Washington Square, undergraduate students can study issues of culture, media, globlalization at NYU’s centers in Paris, London, Prague and Buenos Aires. Graduate students enroll in intensive summer and intersession courses in Paris, Hong Kong, and Beijing.
Public Health - The newly-launched undergraduate program in Public Health asserts an interdisciplinary approach in a global context. Undergraduate majors and minors can study “Health and Society” at NYU’s Center in Ghana . MPH course work examines, among other topics, immigrant health in the communities of New York City, and students have the opportunity for intensive field work and study in Mexico and South Africa .
