Who is eligible to apply?

Current, full-time classroom teachers in the New York City public schools who have taught for at least three years (at the time of application in the New York City public schools). This opportunity is intended to build a community of best practices for teachers of a specific subject area each year. School staff other than full-time classroom teachers (i.e. substitute teachers, administrators, counselors, principals, etc.) are not eligible to apply.

When is the deadline?

What are the dates of travel?

Travel dates are listed on the program web page. Additional details will be provided to Fellows selected for the program. Fellows may choose to travel independently before or after the program at their own expense.

Do I need a passport?

While a passport is not required to apply to the Astor Fellows program, those selected for the program will need a valid passport in order to enter the program location.

Do I need a visa?

Visa needs vary based on your country of citizenship, and the destination of the Astor Fellows program in the year you are participating. Complete instructions will be provided upon acceptance.

Who will make travel arrangements?

NYU Steinhardt will arrange group accommodations for the official program dates. Participants will receive instructions regarding flight purchase.

Do I have the option of going early or staying later than the program dates?

Yes, at your own expense. Upon acceptance, you can contact astor.fellows@nyu.edu to discuss your plans. You may not arrive late or depart early from the official program dates. 

Is absence from scheduled program activities permitted?

In order to honor the desired outcomes of the Astor Fellows program, full participation in all pre-departure, program dates, and post-program activities is essential. Teachers will be required to confirm their availability for all scheduled program activities as a stipulation of their acceptance. 

May friends or family accompany me on this program?

A spouse or partner may accompany you on the program, by paying a spouse supplement to the Office of Global Affairs. Other family members or friends are not permitted to accompany you on the program.

What is included in the fellowship?

For teachers selected as Astor Fellows, NYU Steinhardt will arrange for accommodation, round trip air fare, meals, and visa fees.

How much should I expect to spend out-of-pocket?

Fellows and their spouses/partners (if applicable) are expected to cover ground transportation to and from the airport in NYC.  

What is included in the cost for my spouse/partner?

The partner supplement includes airfare, housing, daily meals, activities, transportation, and international health insurance. Partners are responsible for their own visa cost, immunizations (if required), and daily incidentals.

Do I need to get health clearance or vaccinations before traveling?

The Office of Global Affairs recommends that all participants meet with a personal physician to discuss travel related health and wellness, and to ensure that all vaccinations are up to date. Vaccinations will vary based on program location. Additional information to be provided upon acceptance. 

Do I need international health insurance?

All Astor Fellows participants, and their spouses/partners, will be automatically registered for international health insurance through GeoBlue. Participation in this international health insurance is required. Travelers will receive an insurance card via email closer to the program date. GeoBlue insurance is included as part of your participation and no out-of-pocket payments are required.

May I opt-out of international health insurance?

Enrollment in GeoBlue insurance is included and is a requirement of participation. Fellows and their spouses/partners may not opt-out of health insurance.

Are meals included in my accommodations?

Daily meals are provided by NYU Steinhardt.

Can my partner/spouse participate in the planned activities for the group?

The partner/spouse supplement includes participation in all officially scheduled activities. 

Can I stay in program housing outside official program dates?

Participants may not check in early or stay late in program housing. Participants extending their stay are responsible for their own accommodations.
