Art and Art Professions, Master Teacher of Art History, Criticism, and Praxis (Non-Tenure Track)
Located in New York's historic East Village, NYU's Studio Art Program is closely tied to the international art world and focuses on the contribution of contemporary visual art to a broader cultural dialogue. Graduate and undergraduate studio art programs are interdisciplinary and combine theory and practice with painting, sculpture, photography, digital art, video, performance, and ceramics. Students and faculty at NYU have access to the resources of a major research university, as well as the department's graduate programs in Visual Culture, Art Education, Arts Administration and Art Therapy.
We invite applications for a Master Teacher who sees an ongoing engagement with students as a valuable part of a visible and influential career in the contemporary art world. Responsibilities for this non-tenure track position include teaching two undergraduate lecture courses for studio art majors, as well as one graduate course each semester. Undergraduate responsibilities will include art history (ancient - contemporary), criticism, and visual culture classes designed for studio art majors, as well as praxis courses, which integrate art theory with the production of visual art. Graduate classes will include students from the MFA program, as well as Art Administration, Visual Culture, Art Education, and Art Therapy. The position will include mentoring students in writing, research and curatorial projects, and exhibitions of their own work. The Master Teacher will also work with the Assistant Director of Department's Galleries on curatorial projects on an ongoing basis.
We seek candidates with substantial teaching experience in an art environment, as well as a recognized presence in the contemporary art world. Candidates with published writings and curatorial projects, which are able to integrate art history, critical theory, and visual culture with students' studio practice, are encouraged to apply.
Letters of application with curriculum vitae, and three letters of reference should be sent to: Jesse Bransford, Chair, Art History/Criticism/Praxis Search, Department of Art and Art Professions, New York University, Steinhardt School, 34 Stuyvesant Street, New York, NY 10003.
