August 2, 2005, In a study reported last week, researchers at Harvard and New York University found in a laboratory experiment that the sight of a stranger of another race can prompt a measurable nervous system reaction that probably reflects unconscious biases.

A director of the recently formed Immigration Studies at NYU, Carola Suarez-Orozco, said recent Mexican immigrants, who often cross the border illegally when they are barely teenagers, are generally too preoccupied with work to get into trouble.
