Parenthood can be a wonderful experience, but it can also be enormously stressful. There are countless pressures on contemporary parents. Too often, children are misunderstood. Parents want to do their best, but they need reliable information and support to do so. The latest findings in the areas of child development and parenting are fascinating and important. My work is designed to bring scientific information to the public. I write trade books on parenting, books for children, edit scholarly publications, speak at professional and community organizations, and appear on TV. Moreover, I write articles for trade magazines that offer parents practical information based on sound scientific evidence. My work with graduate students focuses on the scientific aspects of parent training and parenting interventions as well as on all aspects of cognitive and emotional development. I also train school psychology students in the techniques of dynamic psychotherapy with children and adolescents and in diagnostic psychological testing and assessment of personality.
