Katherine Stahl studies the effective instruction of reading in the elementary years. Her research examines reading acquisition and reading comprehension. She is committed to improving student achievement and school effectivenss, especially in urban settings. She is currently the director of the NYU Literacy Clinic. For over twenty-five years, Stahl taught in high poverty public elementary and middle school classrooms. The questions that she researches stem from those experiences and from current classroom observations. She is co-editor of Reading Research at Work: Foundations of Effective Practice (Guilford Press, 2006), a book that explores the classroom implications of twenty years of reading research. Additionally, she is the coauthor of Assessment for Reading Instruction, 2nd Ed. (Guilford Press, 2009), a guide that provides a framework for using classroom assessments to inform instruction. She earned her Ed.D. in reading education from the University of Georgia in 2003.
