Diane Hughes

Diane Hughes is a community and developmental psychologist who examines the intersections of race and ethnicity in the context of work and families. Her research focuses on the mechanisms through which African American families' experiences of racial bias at work influence the messages they transmit to children about ethnicity and race. Hughes attempts to explore how parents from a range of ethnic backgrounds communicate to children about race and ethnicity in the course of their daily routines and practices. In 2003, Hughes and her colleagues received a multi-million dollar grant from the National Science Foundation to establish the Center for Research on Culture, Development, and Education at New York University. Hughes received her doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1988 and taught in the NYU Department of Psychology (FAS) prior to coming to Steinhardt.
