David Montgomery, PhD
David Montgomery is a specialist in drama education, theatre for young audiences, student teaching and integrated arts. As an actor and singer, David performed in numerous professional venues before working as a k-12 teaching artist in New York City and full time middle school drama teacher at I.S. 292 in Brooklyn, New York. David is the advisor for the Program in Educational Theatre’s dual certification degree in Theatre and Social Studies, (ETSS), as well as for summer-only students (EDTC).
He has directed study abroad programs in London, Brazil and Dublin and is the artistic director of the New Play for Young Audiences series at the Provincetown Playhouse, a project where three new plays written by leading playwrights for young audiences are developed every summer. He continues as the director 2012 Looking for Shakespeare Program, where High school students work with him and graduate students from NYU to shape an original production of Shakespeare. Dr. Montgomery has directed educational theatre productions that include The Giver by Eric Coble from the story by Lois Lowry (2009), Kindertransport by Diane Samuels (2008), Stories from the Magic Lake (2006) and Folktale Journey: Old Stories Told in New Ways (2004). He continues to work with Outlaws and Justice, an organization that infuses a dynamic interdisciplinary curriculum into middle school classrooms, using drama to help students make meaning of history and ELA.
Dr. Montgomery has written journal articles and is currently collaborating with Dr. Robert Landy on a book to be published by Palgrave entitled, The Theatre for Change: Education, Social Action, Therapy. He has coordinated numerous international conferences that include last year’s NYU Forum on Citizenship and Applied Theatre. David continues to present papers and facilitate workshops at a variety of conferences around the globe.
