Dr. Mowry's scholarly interests are in the areas of deafness, disability, rehabilitation counseling, counseling people with disabilities, and the intersection of mulitcultural counseling with issues of disability. He is a certified rehabilitation counselor (CRC, certificate # 00054787) and is fluent in American Sign Language. He directs and teaches in the American Sign Language course sequence and minor for Steinhardt.

He is active in New York City by serving on the Board of Directors for Barrier Free Living, an agency serving homeless people with disabilities, and Freedom House, serving people with disabilities who have experienced domestic violence. He also serves on the Institutional Review Board for the Lexington School & Center for the Deaf, Inc. From 1997 to 2000, he was the editor of JADARA: A journal for professionals networking for excellence in service delivery with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, American Counseling Association, American Rehabilitation Counseling Association and American Sign Language Teachers Association.
