Visiting Assistant Professor of Educational Communication and Technology
Maaike Bouwmeester has spent the better part of two decades working at the intersection of educational software and learning theory. Her work focuses on educational platforms that support competency and outcomes based learning environments, and tools to support reflection, collaboration, e-portfolios, performance assessment, and educational quality.
In her role as VP of Product Development at Taskstream, she helped build the company from a 7 to 100 person company, serving over 400 post-secondary institutions in the United States as well as K-12. Her participation included design and visioning, software development processes, ideation, prototyping, user experience and managing diverse teams. Her product development achievements span a wide range of projects including rubric and e-portfolios builders, data analysis and reporting capabilities and educator productivity tools.
Maaike has also worked with a number of institutions as a professor and seminar designer. Her experiences include designing and teaching an NYU faculty seminar on ‘New Technologies for Teaching and Learning’, numerous professional development programs, and advising educational technology graduate students on their capstone projects. She also served as a member of CUNY’s advisory committee on e-portfolios and assessment and currently teaches at NYU as a professor in the Digital Media Design for Learning and Games for Learning programs.
In her dissertation work, Effects of Reflective Rubrics in the E-portfolio Peer Review Process on Pre-service Teachers’ Ability to Integrate Academic Coursework and Field Experiences (2011), Maaike developed an instructional model to support pre-service teachers integration of concepts, theories and skills taught in academic courses with their experiences in the field, using technology as a vehicle to do this.
Previously, Maaike worked as a web designer and prior to that with the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping where she was posted overseas in Croatia and Bosnia. Dr. Bouwmeester earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and her M.A. and Ph.D. from New York University School of Education in Educational Communication and Technology.
She currently lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two sons.
