Harriet Pitts began her teaching career in Head Start a federally funded program. She eventually left Head Start and began working in the New York City Board of Education. While working in the public schools, Pitts served as a classroom teacher, early childhood coordinator, staff developer, Success For All facilitator, literacy coach, and new teacher mentor. Since 1995, Pitts has served as an adjunct professor at the City College of the City University of New York, where she was instrumental in restructuring the college's literacy program. She received her Ed D in elementary education from Rutgers University at New Brunswick in 1984.
