Anita Perr

Adjunct Faculty

Occupational Therapy

Anita Perr uses collaborative teaching to encourage students to explore the best ways to approach clinically relevant issues. Her extensive clinical experience informs her classroom teaching. Students appreciate the problem-based, practical nature of her courses.

Anita Perr has expertise in the use of assistive technology by persons with disabilities and has lectured on topics such as seating and positioning and adaptive computer technology. She has presented at local and national conferences on topics such as environmental accessibility, wheelchair mobility, and assistive technology. Anita has written and co-authored many papers and textbook chapters.

Ms. Perr holds a certification in Neurodevelopmental Treatment of the Adult Hemiplegic and was certified as an Assistive Technology Professional for many years. As a member of the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA), she has been involved in the credentialing process for Assistive Technology Practitioners, Assistive Technology Suppliers, and Rehabilitations Engineers. Collaborations with NYU Tisch's ITP and NYU Tandon's IDM Program have resulted in the development of the NYU Ability Project, an interdisciplinary research space for the development of assistive technologies.

Application of Assistive Technologies Used by People with Disabilities

Introduction to the variety of assistive technologies to students. Technologies covered include seating and wheeled mobility, environmental control, augmentative communication, computer access, and assistive technology for learning. Associated legislation and learning techniques will be discussed.

Developing Assistive Technology

This multi-disciplinary course allows students from a variety of backgrounds to work together to develop examples of assistive technology. Partnering with outside organization students will work in teams to identify a clinical need relevant to a certain clinical site or client population, and learn the process of developing an idea and following that through the development of a prototype product. The major learning activity is the design and fabrication of a device (piece of equipment, software, etc.) that meets a specific need for a specific person with a disability or a clinic that treats clients with disabilities or a category of people with similar needs as a result of their disability.

Introduction to Professional Portfolio

This is the first in a four-course sequence in which students create, assess and refine their portfolios. Portfolios are web-based and include performance observations, case studies, peer ratings, specialty certification, documentation of professional activities, publications, and presentation summaries. At the end of the program, students present their portfolio to a panel of faculty members. The portfolio must document how the student integrated knowledge and skills learned in the curriculum to his or her specialty practice area.

Rehabilitation Evaluation and Intervention

The concepts and principles of rehabilitation, habilitation, compensation, and adaptation as they related to individuals with physical disabilities. Development of clinical reasoning to assess and intervene in the areas of activities of daily living, including environmental control: communication, and mobility using assistive equipment and technology. SPECIAL TOPICS IN DIGITAL MEDIA: Access and Assistive Tech in Historic Sites and Museums

This multidisciplinary course allows students from a variety of backgrounds to work together to learn about and develop assistive technology for historical sites and museums. Students will work in teams to develop prototypes for individuals with diverse motor, cognitive, sensory, and behavior-emotional abilities.

This course gives students the opportunity to develop and assess assistive technologies in an informal education context. This course is designed for students with special interest in assistive technology, informal education, museum studies, and developing prototypes through fabrication and development.
