Orientation for New Doctoral Students

Steinhardt's New Doctoral Student Orientation takes place at the start of each fall semester for that year’s entry class. It is an opportunity to get acquainted with some of the services offered by our School and to meet our staff. The orientation is followed by a reception for students and faculty members from across the School.

New Doctoral Student Orientation for the Fall 2013 entry class is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, August 28th from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm, Pless Hall, 1st Floor Lounge.

First Fridays Research Colloquium

First Fridays meetings will be held in the 3rd Floor Pless Hall Lounge from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. (lunch will be provided). The focus of each meeting will be emailed to all doctoral students in advance of each meeting date. There is no formal registration or fee for First Fridays, but we do ask that you RSVP in advance of the meeting. Professional Development Series

In Cooperation with the Wasserman Center for Career Development, The Office of Research and Doctoral Studies is pleased to offer a series of lunch time discussions focused on the professional development of doctoral students. These seminars will offer practical advice and techniques related to career grwth and advancement for a number of professional choices after graduation. Discussions will take place within the Fall and Spring Semesters in the 3rd Floor Pless Hall Lounge from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM. Lunch will be provided. The scheduled dates and tentative topics are:

September 14, 2012: Writing a CV

October 19, 2012: The Academic Job Search

November 30, 2012: The Academic Job Interview

February 15, 2013: The Non-Academic Job Search

March 15, 2013: The Post-Doc

April 19, 2013: The Adjunct Professor

Dissertation Filing Deadlines

The deadlines below are for filing dissertations with the Office of Research and Doctoral Studies for scheduling your final oral examination. Please discuss your anticipated filing date with your committee chairperson and members well in advance of the deadlines listed here. Instructions on the procedures for filing your dissertation, as well as required forms, should be obtained from the Office of Research and Doctoral Studies. Each deadline date below corresponds to one of the three degree conferral dates (January, May, or September).

Dissertation Format Workshops

If you are planning to file your dissertation on the next deadline and would like to attend a Dissertation Format Workshop, please email Nancy Hall at steinhardt.grad.office@nyu.edu or call us at (212) 998-5044.

The Dissertation Format Workshops are for students who have questions about preparing the dissertation according to the format requirements outlined in NYUSteinhardt's Handbook for Doctoral Study. We will also go over the procedures for filing dissertations and scheduling the final oral exam. You should bring a draft of your dissertation or the section you would like to review. Please note that this workshop is for format only and we will not be discussing dissertation content.

Upcoming workshops dates and times will be posted here when available. If no workshops are scheduled prior to your dissertation filing date and you would like to go over your format, please contact Nancy Hall at nancy.hall@nyu.edu for an appointment.

Doctoral Convocation

In addition to the University's Commencement ceremony (which includes all schools and all degrees), the Steinhardt School holds a graduation ceremony for doctoral graduates each May. We encourage our doctoral graduates to attend this convocation and doctoral hooding ceremony.
