Music Literature of the Baroque Period: Baroque Performance Practice
This course offers students the opportunity to explore topics in historical performance practice ca. 1600-1750. Topics include performance context, phrasing & rhetoric, ornamentation & improvisation, continuo realization, rhythm & notation, tuning & pitch, orchestral & vocal forces, opera, & period instrument construction. Students with performance experience are encouraged to take Baroque Ensemble (E85.1080/2034) in parallel with this course if interested in immediate practical application of the subject matter in a performance setting.
