NYU Steinhardt

Seminar in Music Theory: Music Minimalism

  • Course Number: MPATC-GE 2203
  • Hours: 30
  • Units: 3
  • Description: This course will explore the history & literature of Minimalism in music, focusing on the major American composers grouped under the heading, including La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, & Philip Glass, & including a consideration of a variety of European ?fellow travelers?, in particular Louis Andriessen. Minimalism poses particular challenges to the discipline of musical analysis; the course will introduce various models that have been proposed to study features of the repertoire, & develop others. Yet this is very much a ?hands-on? course; we will be performing as well as listening & analyzing.
