  • Description: Survey traces the evolution of Western urban fashion from the expansion of mercantile capitalism in the 16th century through the rise of consumer culture by the end of the 18th century. Focusing on France as the undisputed leader of style, students consider a variety of topics including clothing as a signifier of status & morality; the mechanics of the clothing & textile trades & the impact of technological innovations; the influence of stylistic trends & personalities; & the politicization of dress during the French Revolution.
