Download the Application in PDF Format

June 30 ? July 6, 2007
Puebla, Mexico

Census 2000 showed that nearly a half-million Mexicans are settled in the New York metropolitan area. According to the Mexican Consulate in New York, more than half of these Mexicans were born in the state of Puebla. NYU Steinhardt's Puebla initiative is aimed at providing educators in New York City public schools, as well as social workers, public health and nutrition professionals, and others serving the Poblano population in New York an opportunity to understand the Puebla-New York connection at its source. The program, designed by the Steinhardt Office of Special Programs and Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla, will begin this summer with a visit to Puebla. This program will offer participants the chance to visit urban and rural schools, healthcare centers, and community centers as well as partake in cultural excursions to such places as the Zócalo, Museo de Artes Populares, and Fuertes de Loreto. A one-day visit with a Poblano family will also be arranged.

The City of Puebla is a beautiful city of a million and a half people, located two hours southeast of Mexico City. It is an active center of collaboration among advocacy groups, educational programs, and community agencies supporting families affected by immigration to the U.S. In addition, universities there support research and community assistance efforts focused on immigration.

Participants will be expected to cover the cost of their airfare to and from Puebla, hotel costs, a program fee, as well as incidental costs such as transfers to and from the NYC airport, additional food costs, etc., which are estimated to be about $2,200 in total.
