Acting Workshop: Character Study

July 28-August 1, 2008
Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 3:15pm

The Acting Workshop: Character Study is geared towards the fundamental understanding of creating a character, and offers concrete tools and techniques for in depth character development. Moving beyond the notion of type casting, students will be immersed in a guided study of acting methodology, and apply their discoveries to exercises and scene work. Focus will be on creating a physical life for the character, understanding given circumstances of the world of the play, and mining the layered relationships that drive the action. The intensive non-credit workshop is for teachers who want to develop practical tools in teaching character development, and actors who want to expand and rejuvenate their craft.

Nancy Smithner, Ph.D., has been teaching acting, directing, physical theatre and acting styles for the past 25 years both nationally and internationally. Her unique perspective of character development is a result of currently being a master teacher in both an acclaimed teacher preparation program, and a professional conservatory training school, as well as being a character actor herself.
