B.F.A. Studio Art - Study Abroad
BFA Global ArtSites Program
The Steinhardt Studio Art Program has now established Global ArtSites in Ghana and Berlin. These two ArtSites enable you to participate directly in some of the most innovative and challenging art scenes in the world. Classes and workshops are taught by artists, who will introduce you to the local art community, and help you to understand the differences in global cultures that are influencing contemporary art. ArtSites have enhanced art facilities and classes for students working in media such as digital printing, video, sculpture, and painting.
Students in the Global ArtSites Program are able to produce and often exhibit their own work, as well as engage with artists, critics, and galleries in an international environment. Additionally, they are able to complete several core academic requirements.
Core ArtSite Faculty include:
Lyle Ashton Harris - NYU Ghana
Delia Gonzalez - NYU Berlin
Sue de Beer - NYU Berlin
During the spring semester of freshmen or sophomore year, Art Majors are invited to apply to the Global ArtSites Program. Students accepted into the Global ArtSites Program will spend the spring semester of their sophomore or junior year at the NYU Berlin ArtSite. During the Fall semester of their junior or senior year, they study in Ghana. This program offers special art making facilities and studio space, as well as workshops with Visiting Artists and Curators, exhibition opportunities, and trips to galleries and studios.
When students return to New York, their experience will continue and culminate with the following components:
- Global Art Exhibition
- “Global” Integrated Liberal Arts Seminar
- Research-Travel Colloquium during January Intersession (locations may vary year to year and will likely include the Middle East or South America)
Upon completion of all components of the Global ArtSites Program and upon satisfactory completion of all other degree requirements, participants will have the distinction, “Global Studies in Art,” noted on the transcript.
The program features a combination of coursework and global study that allows students to experience, compare and analyze the highly dynamic range of activities associated with the globalization of art production, distribution, and reception. The program emphasizes students’ creativity while building a conceptual framework for responding to shifts in contemporary art as it translates social change into new forms of understanding.
Other NYU study abroad locations include Prague, London, Paris, Florence, Madrid, Shanghai, Tel Aviv, Abu Dhabi, Prague, and Buenos Aries, for students who are not interested in applying for the ArtSites Program. All BFA students are encouraged to study abroad for at least one semester.
