Summer Art Intensive
Due to major building renovations, the Art Intensive program will not be offered in Summer 2012.
NYU Steinhardt’s high school residential summer art intensive allows young artists ages 16 to 18 the opportunity to explore their ideas in the heart of the international art world. Students will expand their skills, liberate their imaginations, and enrich their understanding of contemporary art.
Classes are led by distinguished NYU faculty in painting, drawing, sculpture, digital imaging, installation art, and more. Students work in professional studios and workshops. They also visit many of New York City’s cutting-edge galleries, museums, performance venues, and public exhibition spaces.
During the final week of the program, participants mount a group exhibition of their work in NYU’s Barney Building in downtown Manhattan. Students also receive individual portfolio sessions to help prepare for portfolio reviews when applying to colleges and art schools.
Important Information About the Program Schedule
This is an intensive residence program. Students are engaged in classes from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm with a short break for lunch. In the evenings and on weekends, students are required to use studio time and to participate in field trips, including visits to premier museums, theater performances, concerts, and other places of cultural interest.
The program offers non-credit courses in the following four areas: drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital art.
Drawing: Students step quickly beyond traditional still-life drawing exercises and embrace conceptual drawing projects on a larger scale and scope. Composition, expression, and experimentation are the foci with an emphasis on a work's content.
Painting: Students learn about color theory, acrylic techniques, and examples of contemporary painting. Instructors challenge students to step outside what may be familiar and comfortable and try new approaches, embracing a traditional medium in a contemporary way.
Sculpture: What is Sculpture? Students experience a contemporary understanding of art as an object, both abstract and formal. In addition to wood, metal, and plaster, students are encouraged to incorporate less traditional materials and expectations of what a sculpture can be.
Digital Art: Many artists today utilize digital tools to make everything from interactive software to traditional painting. In digital art courses, students learn to use software, the Internet, and digital photography to broaden their skills and build images. Students can also use NYU digital facilities to enrich their creative exploration of the other mediums they will be studying.
Housing
This is a residential program and all participants are required to live on campus for the duration of the program. Students stay in shared rooms in an NYU residence hall with one or two roommates. The residence hall is located near Washington Square Park, a short walk from campus buildings. Students purchase a meal plan that includes 10 meals per week and a card with $25 declining dollars. They can eat meals in campus dining halls, Monday-Friday. Students should bring long (80 inch) twin bed size flat and fitted sheets, blankets, bedspreads, pillows, and their own towels. The residence hall building has air conditioning and Internet access with an ethernet cable. Students staying in NYU housing should move in on June 26 and attend a required orientation session that evening.
NYU Public Safety Services officers are on duty 24 hours a day. Specially assigned Resident Assistants (R.A.) monitor discipline, including enforcing a curfew for students in this program, and help students as they adjust to living away from home.
Because our standards for achievement are high, we accept highly motivated students who will enjoy the classes as well as the cultural activities. It is, therefore, important to know that failure to comply with regulations will be grounds for immediate dismissal from the program. Parents and/or guardians will be contacted as soon as any unsatisfactory behavior is recognized.

This is an intensive program. Please see the following sample itinerary for a sense of the daily required activities. All daytime and evening classes and activities are mandatory.

The NYU Steinhardt Summer Art Intensive takes place for three weeks starting on Monday, June 27, 2011. An orientation is scheduled for Sunday, June 26.
Summer 2011 estimated Tuition and Lab fees: $2,800. Estimated room and board fees: $1,100. Admission is highly competitive.
