Art Education - Curriculum

37-CREDIT INITIAL CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
To fulfill New York State teacher certification requirements, students who have an undergraduate B.A., B.S., or B.F.A degree in studio art and who wish to acquire teacher certification must enroll in the 37-credit initial certification program, which can now be completed in as little as 12-months (Summer, Fall, Spring) of  full-time study.

30-CREDIT PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
Students with an initial teaching art certificate or who are interested in an academic degree without certification take the 30-credit M.A. program, which includes the academic requirements for New York State professional certification. To fulfill the total requirements for professional certification, a candidate must in addition complete two years of school experience as a full-time paid teacher. This requirement can be fulfilled while taking courses towards the master’s degree.

STUDIO ART IN NEW YORK OR VENICE, ITALY
Art Education MA students have the option to complete their 6 credits of graduate studio art during the summer (July-August) and can elect to study in New York or as part of our Studio Art MA program in Venice, Italy

Art Education Course Descriptions

Students must successfully complete the New York State Teacher Certification Examination. Scores must be submitted to the State Education Department before it will consider issuing a certificate to teach in public schools in New York State.

Students admitted with an MA or MFA in Studio Art do not have to take studio credits. All other students will be required to take 6-9 credits in studio art.
