How to Apply
All applications must be submitted to the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development Office of Graduate Admissions. Follow the instructions outlined by Office of Graduate Admissions for completing your online application.
The following is a list of all items that must accompany the completed application form.
- Transcripts: Must be obtained from all undergraduate and graduate institutions, if applicable.
- Three Letters of Recommendation: Should be obtained from academic and professional sources related to your background in art and/or education and teaching.
- Current résumé
- Statement of Purpose (500-words): Must describe your interest in the field of art education and the direction you wish to pursue in the Master’s Program. This statement corresponds to the Personal Statement required on the application. We strongly encourage candidates to address their interest in the philosophy and focus of the NYU Art Education program as it relates to personal and professional goals.
- Portfolio: Your Portfolio will be uploaded as part of the online application process. Applicants must submit 20 images. Images should be recent work in
jpg, png, or gif format. Images should be no larger than 1280 x 1024
pixels (maximum 5MB). PDFs no larger than 10MB may be uploaded as well.
Each image must have a title, description, size and medium entered at
the time you upload it.
Videos not in excess of 60 MB can be uploaded. Videos can be a compilation of various works but the total running time cannot exceed five minutes per video. Genres appropriate to video documentation include video art, performance, and kinetic art, NOT documentation of sculptures or exhibitions.
We do not accept PowerPoint or Keynote presentations.
Please include an inventory of images (PDF format) with your name in the top right hand corner with a list of images numbered in the order of viewing, include title, if any, medium, dimensions, and date.
Also include a Statement of Purpose and Resume in PDF format as part of the Portfolio upload. An uploaded Artist's Statement is optional. - Personal Interview: A personal interview by invitation only is required of those students in close proximity to NYU; for those who live outside the area, a phone interview is required. You will be notified by phone or email to schedule a personal or phone interview with the program faculty.
- TOEFL Scores: We require the TOEFL exam from all applicants whose native language is not English and did not receive the equivalent of a 4 year U.S. undergraduate education from an institution where English is the official language of instruction. Applicants holding or completing only a graduate degree from an English speaking institution are still required to submit a TOEFL score unless the graduate program was four or more years in duration.
