This dual-degree option offers a unique combination of specialized content with a valuable professional qualification. Students benefit from their participation in Costume Studies, with its focused curriculum, and from courses on library and information science. This approach prepares students for specialist positions that require subject-specific knowledge and library science skills. Both modules are based at NYU’s Washington Square campus.

The library program operates out of Bobst Library, NYU’s main library on Washington Square. Costume Studies’ headquarters is the Barney Building, in the East Village. Both the Costume Studies MA and the Library and Information Science MS emphasize research and analysis, facilitated by access to NYU’s world-class research resources.

You will be able to transfer nine NYU credits to Palmer LIU and eight Palmer credits to NYU to complete the required credits for the two degrees. The dual degree provides unique opportunities for orientation, mentorship, and professional training.

The Mentorship Track includes a 160-hour mentoring structure in which subject specialists from NYU libraries introduce students to the requirements of the field and opportunities for hands-on experience. The track’s core is a series of required modules, which include reference/instruction, collection development, digital scholarship, and professional development.

The Internship Track is designed for those students who are not focused on careers as subject librarians; their interests may lie in archives, media entities, museums, or similar institutions. This track includes a series of internships totaling 160 hours in which you will work with trained library professionals in libraries or institutions in the New York metropolitan area.

Our dual degree combines the rigorous study of costume studies with professional library qualification to give graduates a competitive edge in the evolving fields of information science, digital humanities, curatorial studies, and data archiving. You'll be prepared for highly sought-after positions as a subject specialist/scholar-librarian in academic and research institutions or as an archivist in libraries, museums, publishing houses, fashion companies, and other institutions.

Program Benefits for International Students

If you’re an international student, you may be able to work in the United States after graduation for an extended period of time. Most students studying on F-1 visas will be eligible for 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) off-campus work authorization. F-1 students in our program may also be eligible for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) OPT extension, allowing you to extend your time in the United States to pursue degree-related work experience for a total of 36 months or 3 years. For more information on who can apply for this extension and how, see NYU’s Office of Global Services: STEM OPT.
